Wild Blue Iris

The wild blue iris is a beloved flower that has been popular for generations. The pale blue color of the flowers and the delicate, ornate petals make them an interesting, enjoyable addition to any flower garden. The plants bloom during their third year and are slightly smaller than the garden iris. To speed its germination, cut off the pointed end of a seed with scissors.

Wild blue iris plants will tolerate both full sunlight and partial sunlight. Plant seeds 1 inch apart and thin seedlings when they are a few inches tall, leaving at least 6 inches between the plants. Wild iris seeds can be started in flats of peat moss in the fall and transplanted into the garden in the spring, or they can be started directly in the soil outdoors. Keep the seeds moist during germination and water your plants regularly. Allow the plants to self-sow if you want them to spread. Otherwise, deadhead flowers at the end of the summer. Seeds are packaged and germination tested for current year.
