Choosing the Right Roses for Your Garden

December 18, 2008

When you first look through available rose types, the choice can seem overwhelming. There are hundreds of rose varieties available, each with a different color, petal arrangement, size and type of plant. There are rose vines, shrubs, miniatures and more. The way the roses look will probably be important to you, but there are several other important factors as well.

Consider how much space you have for your roses. You will need to know about how large your rose plants will get before deciding where to plant them. If you have a specific space in mind already, choose a plant size with that space in mind. There are some rose plants that grow to very large sizes. A 20-foot rose plant is not unusual. The size of the area you have is also important for the amount of air circulation that the roses will have. If you have only a small space that has plants around it, a climbing rose might be necessary in order to allow some air circulation to the roses.

Think about the way the roses will smell. Some roses have a stronger smell than others. Some have little or no fragrance at all. If you are sensitive to fragrances and may have an allergic reaction to stronger ones, choose one that has less fragrance in order to avoid problems.

You will also need to consider your climate. There are some roses that do better in cold weather than others. If you have particularly cold winters, choose your rose variety carefully in order to grow roses that will survive until the next season. There are some varieties of roses that do very well in cold climates

Think about your purpose for growing your roses. Why do you want to start growing them? If you want them as a beautiful addition to the garden, any type may achieve this goal. If you want them in order to have cut roses for indoors, there are some types that will not hold together well if cut. Rose types like hybrid tea roses stay together well and make beautiful cut arrangements.

Think about the color of the roses. The color should be one that you will enjoy seeing each day while the plant is in bloom. But, you might want the color to coordinate with the other flowers in the garden. If you plan to use them as cut roses, you may wish the color of the blooms to coordinate with the décor indoors.

The roses you choose should work well with the rest of the flowers and plants in the garden. This means the flowers should not be ones that will damage the rose plants. This may mean keeping plants that are predatory away from your rose plants. Vines and plants that attach themselves to others may not work well near a rose plant.
