Butterfly bush is on of the best but some butterflies will only show up if you have particular flowers in you yard. If you get enough different kinds of flowers you can have over 20 kinds of butterflies.

Get yourself a big hat and some sunscreen and get out there and garden. You can start in the shade and work you way out in the sun,

It’s nice to know that there are many varieties of flowers that can grow in the shade. I’m not a gardener myself, as I sunburn quite easily. Maybe I’ll create my own shaded garden.

I absolutely love the idea of stepping stones. I love looking at flowers and gardens, but I have to admit, I’m not a gardener myself. I had no idea there was a “right order” to plan flowers. Interesting.

Julie, the ferns don’t take that much water when they are in the shade like you have. Using a couple inches of mulch would help cut down on watering a lot. Some blue hostas would look nice in there too.

Scott, I started out not liking hostas either but as soon as I figured out there were so many different kinds and colors I can’t live without them.

Thanks for the feedback. I have never been to Florida but from everything I have read roses should be planted in Southern Florida in Novembera and in Northern Florida in December-January.

I didn’t know that there were so many flowers that could grow in shaded areas. My wooded fence is about seven feet high, and my yard is about 16×12 with a huge palm tree and a large shed, so the area around the fence is almost all shade. I like the idea of growing some ferns in my yard, although I work full time and don’t have a lot of time to spend watering plants. Would using the organic materials keep the moisture in for long periods of time between watering sessions?
