Cut Flower Garden

November 8, 2008

Annual flowers are often used in cut flower gardens because they generally bloom repeatedly all season when the blooms are cut away. There are also some perennials that will keep blooming, however, so a cut flower garden can have plenty of variety in the type of plants it includes.

Being we have such long winters here in Minnesota I have plenty of time to think about and lay out new gardens for spring. Our first frost in fall is usually in October and our last frost is usually in mid to late May. That’s about 7 months of planing an rest from the garden. By the time spring finally rolls around we are more than ready to get going.

When choosing the flower seeds for the garden, keep the end result in mind. The flowers should be ones that go together well if you want to create flower arrangements. The colors should complement each other well if they are to be used together. The sizes of the blooms should also be considered. If you want many flowers in your arrangement, you may want smaller blooms. If you want to fill your house with single-flower vases, choose flowers that will have large blooms. This ensures that even a single flower will be an explosive addition of beauty and color in any room
